Euro 2024 social round-up: Bellingham brilliance, Sheeran and Ferdinand toast to England

The Euro 2024 knockout stages are well underway as England and Spain edged into the quarter-finals on Sunday.

Gareth Southgate s side were saved by Jude Bellingham s brilliance and an extra-time finish by Harry Kane to defeat Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen.

Spain were at their usual best, despite an early scare, as they swept aside Georgia to continue their impressive start to this European Championship.

With more last-16 action around the corner, we take a look back at the day s best bits across social media.

Beauty from Bellingham

Bellingham proved England s hero in Gelsenkirchen, levelling after 94 minutes in their last-16 clash with Slovakia.

The Real Madrid midfielder crashed in a remarkable overhead-kick equaliser, leaving supporters, tea…

Rio 2016: Pele delights in long-awaited Olympic triumph

Brazil s greatest footballer, Pele, described the country s historic first Olympic men s football triumph as the perfect ending to the Rio Games.

Pele played an integral role in three of Brazil s five World Cup triumphs, but the nation had never tasted Olympic glory prior to Saturday s meeting with Germany at the Maracana.

After Neymar s free-kick had been cancelled out by Max Meyer, a penalty shootout was required to separate the men s finalists.

Yet it was Brazil who eventually prevailed, talisman Neymar converting the winning kick from 12 yards after Nils Petersen s effort had been saved by Weverton.

Success for the home nation prompted a huge outpouring of joy at the Maracana, with Neymar part of the team that lost the 2012 Olympic final to Mexico in …

Spain and Sweden eye Euro 2008 quarter-final spot

Either Spain or Sweden could wrap up a place in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals if they emerge triumphant from the pair s Group D meeting here on Saturday.

Both won their opening matches with Spain particularly impressive in dismantling Russia 4-1 while Sweden defeated the holders Greece 2-0.

Those results put the pair in pole position to qualify from the group and a victory for either one on Saturday would virtually assure their progress to the next stage.

And while Sweden were gritty and controlled in breaking down the negative Greeks, thanks in no small part to the continued brilliance of veteran forward Henrik Larsson and a moment of magic from Inter Milan star Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Spain sizzled in their destruction of Guus Hiddink s Russia.

It has a…

Euro 2008 semi-final 1 – Germany 3-2 Turkey – who will join them in the final?

I know I’m not the only one to have said it, but I repeat once again, never write off the Germans. They didn’t play particularly well against Turkey and, on balance, they are probably lucky to be through to Sunday’s final. Having said that, one team can only have so much luck and they’ve been there so many times before that it is more likely to be a knack than purely luck.

Turkey showed great endeavour and fighting spirit together with some real quality. They deservedly took the lead but we should have all realised the writing was on the wall when an outplayed Germany produced an equaliser out of nowhere just four minutes later.

Turkey continued to play well and with so many players missing through inju…

Barcelona v Real Madrid: Messi´s dominant 2017-18 LaLiga numbers leave Ronaldo trailing

When the fixtures came out for the 2017-18 LaLiga season, May 6 was burned on to the minds of Spanish football fans.

Four games from the end of the campaign, Barcelona and Real Madrid would meet at Camp Nou with it all on the line.

Except, it didn t really pan out like that.

Barca will step out on home turf for the first time since taking the title back from Madrid, a cantering triumph that was sealed by a 4-2 victory at Deportivo La Coruna last weekend.

Ernesto Valverde s men are yet to taste defeat in Spain s top flight this season and sit 15 points above their bitter rivals.

One possible explanation for the gulf is a stellar contribution from Lionel Messi, who tops the charts across a raft of Opta metrics during the current campaign. For the …

On This Day in 2011: Lionel Messi stars as Barcelona win Champions League

Lionel Messi produced a Wembley masterclass as Barcelona beat Manchester United 3-1 in the Champions League final on this day in 2011 to become European champions for a fourth time.

Pep Guardiola won his second Champions League as Barca head coach in three years after a dominant performance from his side.

They reached the final after defeating El Clasico rivals Real Madrid 3-1 on aggregate in the last four, with United sweeping aside Schalke 6-1 in their semi-final.

Guardiola’s side outplayed United in the first half, enjoying 68 per cent possession and having 22 shots, but were still level at half-time as Pedro’s opener was cancelled out by Wayne Rooney, who side-footed home from 15 yards after a one-two with Ryan Giggs.

Barca’s dominance continued…

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers took care of business last Sunday night with a convincing win over the Cowboys, thus beginning their hopeful road back to the Super Bowl.

Vikings vs Eagles TNF Prop Bets: Cousins Airs It Out in the City of Brotherly Love

The season-opening upset of the Kansas City Chiefs by the Detroit Lions was a good reminder that anything can happen on Thursday Night Football, and that’s why we’re all cautious with the Week 2 odds as the Minnesota Vikings take on the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Super Bowl runner-ups handled business in Week 1 against the New England Patriots while the Vikings faltered at home to a Tampa Bay Buccaneers squad that nobody believed in. That has set the Eagles up as the TNF odds favorites at Lincoln Financial Field in a game that could have major ramifications in the NFC.

Find out what my best NFL picks are in the prop market for the Vikings vs. Eagles matchup tonight. Plus, don’t forget to check out our Vikings vs. Eagles predictions.
